Adobe Photoshop/printing

Question
I created a bookcover using photoshop 7. I took the photoshop file to my local printer to see how it would look when printed.
What looks like gold on my monitor printed ugly yellow. The other colors were also off. Dissapointed, I went to another printer.
This printer had added a red tinge to everything. How can I make sure that what I see on my monitor will be what will turn up when printed?

Answer
Hi Ian,

Every desktop or laptop has different settings, try setting the screen resolution to default. And try printing small samples at home to have an idea of what the printer will be printing. Also, make sure you are working in CMYK instead of RGB. This affects the print quality alot. Let me know what type of monitor you are using or what laptop. THis is for me to have a better understanding of the adjustments you might have to make and the operating system on your hard drive.
