Adobe Photoshop/parsing errors
Expert: Kevin Stohlmeyer - 12/10/2009
QuestionHi,
just checked your answer concerning parsing problems of JPR-files. I have encoutered this issue with my CS, BUT no problems earlier than with new images. Old material works fine and with it I have used same camera, software and computer while my latest images have reported of the problem "Could not complete your request because of a problem parsing the JPEG data". Let me tell what I have experienced.
1) Problem happens only with CS and not f.ex with PS Elements nor Windows Vista when used Preview-option. Only JPG files have been affected.
2) If I open the file with Elements, change it a bit and store it anew as JPG, still, CS can't open it. If stored as TIFF, things
work well also in CS. This may give hint of the nature of the problem. It is hiden in some "unchangeable" part of the header.
3)This problem is seen only with copies of files; original JPG from camera (and from HD when stored in originnal form) works well also in CS, but as soon as I have stored it anew, problems may occur. Just checked how 3000 images (from same batch) and CS worked well for the first - say - 2000 images but then problems occured. Seems to me that date of last modification has changed when the problem starts to occur. This suggest to some sort of instability of CS?
4) The problem is same in back-up copies of DVD and HD.
To me this all suggest to some sort unstability of CS. Surprisingly Elements 6 and 7 work all fine with files not accessible to CS.
All opinions appreciated,
Pekka
AnswerHi Pekka,
Honestly, its all a matter of utilizing outdated software. CS is no longer supported since it is over 5 years old. CS is not compatible with Vista per Adobe and Microsoft's support database. Elements 7 is newer than CS and has more compatibility with files. 6 came out in 2006, and 7 in 2008 and they are listed as compatible with Vista. The instability you speak of is because CS is not recommended on Vista operating systems. Since there is no support on the compatibility, we are all left wondering how it will affect CS. The jpg data is one of the more consistent errors I have heard of.
People can complain that 5 years is not that old, but in terms of technology it is. Adobe and MS solution: Upgrade. My solution is to either downgrade to XP, or upgrade your CS.
Thanks
