Hi Richard,

I do alot of freehand "painting" in Photoshop (ultimately for print), and was wondering what the ideal DPI is for that type of material.

Answer
I always recommend using the highest resolution setting you can with respect to your computer's performance abilities. Obviously you want to match the output to however you'll be presenting your work. If you want to PRINT it, then 1200 dpi is the best. If you're only going to be using it on a web page, you can get away with 300 dpi.
