Adobe Photoshop/Sharpening color image in black & white mode

Question
Hi:

I have heard that one way to produce sharp color photos is to convert the photo to b & w, sharpen, and then turn the color back on.  Is that true, and how do you do it?

Thank you!

Gary

Answer
HI Gary,

Thats actually not possible. Once you convert to B&W/Grayscale the color is gone unless you use an adjustment layer, which means you are still sharpening just the color image. What I normally do is convert the image to a smart object and run a sharpening filter (so I can revise the image).

Here is also another video showing how to use CS4 to sharpen the details:

Thanks
