Adobe Photoshop/replace old text on a map

Question
I have a map as a.jpg file. The cities are called by their Romanian names. I wish to change these to their old Hungarian names. I have CS3 Extended (10.0.1) but I am no expert. If possible I would like to keep the background map detail over which the city names are printed.
I am very unsure of how to use layers but I am very good at following instructions! If you can help I would be very grateful.

Answer
Hi Howard,

Here's how I would do it. I would make a copy of the Background layer, you do this by dragging the layer down to the "new layer" icon at the bottom of the Layers palette, then save the document as a PSD. This will be your working document.

Then on the new layer you should try the Spot Healing Brush tool to "erase" the text. This probably will do the trick. If you are not getting what you want try changing the tool settings, I believe these are at the top of the screen in CS3.

After you've erased the old text you will use the Type tool to add the new text.
