Adobe Photoshop/Adobe CS2 won't let me edit layers or add new ones

Question
Thanks Lisa~

Actually the crash happened when I was using the pen tool and making a line under some text.. I think I tried to use the move tool incorrectly and it crashed the system. No error messages where given.

Here is a Screenshot of what's going on -

Do you see the small black box by my text? That's new, I've never seen that before, and I can't click on the "Layer 1" in my layer box to edit the text.

Also I can't add a new layer unless I totally flatten the image. It's never done this before and I'm wondering if I accidentaly hit something while using the Pen tool.

I'm on Window's XP. I did a System restore and it didn't help either.

Thank You~
Heather

Answer
Yikes, Heather, I couldn't log into your pictures and see what you're talking about! But this is a weird problem and I'm not sure I have the answer anyway.

Why don't you send me the screen shot via email instead of trying to have me log onto your album -- lizal@little-works.com -- and I can take a look at it that way.

Also -- one thing you could try is resetting your Photoshop preferences. To do this, launch Photoshop, and hold down Alt+Ctrl+shift. When asked to reset the preferences say yes. But before you do this, save any custom things you've created like patterns, actions, styles, brushes, gradients, shapes and color palettes, etc. These will also be reset, so make make a backup copy of your whole Photoshop preferences file before you reset it.

The other thing is to completely uninstall and reinstall the program, but often Photoshop will respond to its preferences being deleted, so you might try that first.

Meanwhile, here are some resources for Photoshop problems that might shed some light:

1. Photoshop 911: These people are usually pretty good at system stuff, and you can ask questions here:
http://www.photoshop911.com/emergency.html

You can also search their archive of questions.

2. Photoshop Cafe:
http://www.dreamweavercafe.com/cafe/forumdisplay.php?fid=16

If that link doesn't take you to the Photoshop area (even though the link says dreamweaver?!) just click on The Cafe, which will take you to the start page for the forums. Then you'll see The Panel in the 3rd section down, which contains discussion for Photoshop.

Hope this helps some anyway, and I'll look to receive your screen shot.

Lisa

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.

Awards and Honors
PICA award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award for the design of a media kit that accompanied a magazine I was art directing at the time)
