Question
Program:  Adobe Illustrator Version 11
Computer Dell Laptop Pentiun 4 with 768 meg memory, running windows home XP
I know your I.D. was about photoshop but hope you can help.
When illustrator is starting it comes up with a runtime error. It reads runtime had to terminate in an unusual way.  Top of the box says microsoft visual c ++ runtime library.  All other adobe applications seem to run fine.  Any help you could give would be appreciated :)

Answer
Hi Karen,

I don't think it's Illustrator -- but to be sure, you could always uninstall that program and reinstall it.

It sounds more to me like it has to do with Windows, rather than any given application. But before I advise you to reinstall your OS, I'd suggest you do a little research from other people who have had similar problems. I haven't had this happen, but I did a little research and came up with some links that will hopefully give you more information:

Windows BBS.com:

Gladiator Security Forum:

In a nutshell, the instances I've found where people had this particular problem occurred with Internet Explorer, specifically. I've also seen suggestions that runtime errors have to do to with spyware.

So I think I'd work from the standpoint that it's not necessarily Illustrator. Try the uninstall and then reinstall of that program, but if you're still getting the runtime error, then you probably need to consider that it's Windows causing the problem.

Hope this helps, and if it doesn't, please post back and we'll try something else. In the meantime, I'll try and find some more info that would be of help, and bookmark it for you.

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.

PICA award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award for the design of a media kit that accompanied a magazine I was art directing at the time)
