Candice,
I am a first time user of Photoshop.  I took some prom pics of me and my date but I would like to cut the pic of the current background and place us in a new background setting.  What are the steps to accomplishing this?

I suggest using the pen too and draw an outline.
draw an outline with the tool that looks like a pen
after you go around a curve, alt + click the point it creates, or it will go nuts when you try to do the next point.
bascially, play with it until you get it ;), it's easy.

go to you layers box (on the right) and click the paths tab. Apple click, or ctrl click the path you just made, and the crawly ants will appear around the picture. The move the pic over to the background you like.
