Adobe Photoshop/Border around picture

Question
When I am working on a jpeg photo and I use say extract or background eraser and I save the photo I end up with a border around the picture so when I put it on a different background the picture is bigger than I want it.  How do I stop this from happening.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Jennese,

It's hard for me to imagine what you're seeing, but the best I can come up with is that maybe you're zoomed in too far when you're doing your editing. Is it possible that you're doing your edits in a tight area of the photo, then when you finish, you zoom out and have parts of the image left -- the parts around the edge? To remedy this, try and zoom out to 100% view from time to time as you work.

Also, when you use the Extract filter, make sure that you join the line you draw with the marker tool, and fill the area completely with the paint bucket. Hit OK, and you should be left with just that area, and nothing else.

But I've never actually experienced what you're talking about. Can you post a picture of this online and send me the link? That would help me understand exactly what's happening.

Hope this helps. And if you can, please post a sample and explain exactly what tool you used and the steps you followed in order to get the results shown in the picture.

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.

PICA award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award for the design of a media kit that accompanied a magazine I was art directing at the time)
