Adobe Photoshop/CR2 files to TIFF

Question
Hello,

Thank you for you time on allexperts, what a great site!  My
question is this:

How do I convert CR2 files to TIFF?

I got a photograper to mail me the original pictures of a photo
shoot but they are in raw data form.  I have photoshop CS but it
doesn't seem to read the CR2 format...

Hope to hear from you soon and thanks once again for you help!

Answer
Hi Duncan,

First off, I'm going to apologize ahead of time for not getting back to you yesterday. And secondly, I'll apologize ahead of time for possibly not being able to answer your question! I don't work with Camera Raw images at all, and as such, know very, very little about it. But I did a little research and found some sites that you can check out that can hopefully give you some insight.

1. According to the Photoshop online Help, accessed through the Help pulldown menu within the program, the Camera Raw plug-in is activated automatically when opening an image that's been shot raw. I'd suggest making sure you have the Camera Raw plug-in, for starters.

The path to the Camera Raw plug-in is [your Photoshop program folder] > Plug-Ins Folder > File Formats folder. Like this:
http://little-works.com/all_experts/cameraraw.gif

Also, here's the page on the Adobe Web site that gives basic information about the Camera Raw plug-in:
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html

2. This may not directly apply to what you're doing, but the site may give you more information. Or, you could post to someone on that site who can help:
http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00ENjN

3. More info on another site that deals with Camera Raw and the Adobe Bridge; again, not sure if this applies directly to you, but you could certainly check the site for more info:
http://photoshopnews.com/2005/05/03/raw-shooters-cs2-migration-guide/

4. I think this article is a little older, but hopefully will contain some things you can use:
http://www.digitalmediadesigner.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=31628

As I said, I do apologize because I just don't have a need to deal with this type of image, but I hope you can glean some help from the aforementioned sites.

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.

Awards and Honors
PICA award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award for the design of a media kit that accompanied a magazine I was art directing at the time)
