Question
I have numerous files that I want to change the orientation from landscape to portrait.  Do you know of a way I can make a 90 degree tilt in each photo, without having to do each picture individually? The photos are in Dell photo format,  I have Photoshop Elements, but am a novice user.

Answer
Hi Derby,

What you need to do is set up an Action, and run it. We're talking about an automated process here.

But I don't use Photoshop Elements, so I can't advise you as to the commands. I use Actions quite a bit in Photoshop CS, but I don't want to guide you down the wrong path. So here's a link to a tutorial on how to use Actions in Elements:

If you have problems understanding this, or need some help, please post back and I'll help you work it out. But this looks to be a pretty concise explanation.

What you're doing, basically, is setting up a series of commands that Elements will run automatically. You're recording these commands and they'll be "played back" later, when you run the action. It's like setting up a macro.

Here's a link to where I've answered this question for Photoshop users -- maybe this will help you too.

And here's a movie I did that shows how to use this -- but remember, this is for Photoshop.

These things that I've done for Photoshop will show you the *premise* behind using Actions, but you'll need to follow instructions for Elements.

Hope this helps, and post back if you need clarification --

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.

Awards and Honors
PICA award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award for the design of a media kit that accompanied a magazine I was art directing at the time)
