Answer
Hi Jon,
there are many ways to do this, example:

1)Drag the illustrator object into Photoshop file. It then becomes a smart object without losing any quality.

                          OR

2)Copy the illustrator object and paste it in photoshop. However you need to take care of few settings to preserver the quality and editing capabilities.

Configure Clipboard preferences in Illustrator:
Choose Edit > Preferences > Files & Clipboard (Windows) or Illustrator > Preferences > Files & Clipboard (Mac OS X).
In the Clipboard section, select the desired format.
If you selected AICB, select either Preserve Paths or Preserve Appearance.
Click OK.

Then when you are pasting in Photoshop, make sure you select "Paste as Shape Layer" when asked.

Hope this helps you out :-)
