Adobe Photoshop/Invalid Text Layers Error

Question
I've encountered a problem where all the psd files that I've created/edited in PS 7, that contained unrasterized text layers, i've tried to open in PS CS, it would load but upon reading the file, an error pops up saying that I have an invalid text layer and it wasnt able to complete my request and it doesn't open my file(s)..

Is there a way that it can be fixed? any repairing programs or anything? What should I do?

Answer
Hi John,

If you will, I'd like for you to clarify something for me. You say the file will load -- so I'm assuming it opens, right? Yet you say the file doesn't open... so I'm a little confused. At what point do you get the error message?

Usually when this happens to me it's because -- for whatever reason -- I no longer have the same fonts I used to create the files, on my machine. For instance, if I've reformatted my hard drive or something, or for some reason have disabled a font, and that font is needed in my Photoshop file, the program will give me the same error message you describe.

But when this happens to me, I'm actually able to open the file. Then all my text layers have yellow triangle icons, in the Layers palette -- meaning the font isn't correct. I also get a dialog box asking if I'd like to update the file, or leave it alone -- meaning if I say Update, Photoshop CS will hunt for the font and associate it with the text in my file.

Here's the extra information I need from you: Do these files actually open? And -- if so, do you see the yellow triangles icons in the Layers palette? And at what point do you get the error message?

So far, this sounds like a font issue to me -- so probably no need for repairing anything. BTW -- can you also tell me what platform and OS you're running?

Thanks,

Lisa

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.
