Question
I am working on two websites and I need to make logos for both sites. Problem is I am not an artist and not a good drawer. Is there a website somewhere that allows users to create logos based on basic shapes, which allow you to choose the background color? I am an intermediate Adobe Photoshop user so I know how to work my way around it Photoshop, but if I actually have to draw the image there is going to be a problem.

Answer
Hi Dennis,

There are a handful of sites that help generate logos, but I don't recommend them; they tend to repeat themselves, so marks become confusingly similar. Not many clients will appreciate this.

I do have a couple of solutions for you, though. First, pick up a book or two on graphic design for logos to get some ideas. I'm willing to bet you aren't giving yourself enough credit for being creative. Given some design ideas and a little information on the clients, you should be able to come up with a few concepts that can be refined. The process goes in cycles until a final product is achieved, and you'll learn along the way.

Another option is to sketch some ideas and post to some design forums for feedback. Most of these communities will help you dial in the concepts (providing you offer a starting design) as well as how to use the tools. Bear in mind that Photoshop is not great for logos, because it is a raster tool. Consider using Illustrator if you can.

Finally, and I'm sure this has crossed your mind, hire a designer. If budget is a concern, consider soliciting (with permission) on various freelancer or design oriented forums. Many freelance sites exist where you can post a price you are willing to pay, and others bid for your work. This can have mixed results, but might be worth your time to look into.

I realize this isn't exactly what you were hoping to hear, but speaking as a designer I hope you'll understand that I'm offering this advice with sincerity. Out of concern for your business and your client, I highly recommend hiring a designer.

If you decide to do it yourself, please feel free to follow up or ask again; I can point you to a number of sites and communities that will help you along the way.

Best regards,

-Scott
