Adobe Photoshop/PS CS - paintbrush problems

Question
For some reason paintbrush and pencil tools have stopped working and I just can't figure out why.  Some other tools seem to work (paint bucket and magic eraser for example) but paint brush, pencil (and even normal eraser and cloning tool) don't.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled, but no difference.  I've tried LAB mode, RGB, grayscale.... I've created new files, I've tried to edit old files, I'm at a loss.  I've rebooted too.  It used to work fine.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Answer
the only I can think of, if it's a legal copy, is that you need to update your software. I've had this question before, and I wish I had a better answer. But ya, updating seems to always be the answer. Also, make sure your quicktime is updated as well. CS2 and macs were having that problem.

if it's a not so legal copy: after a while, I don't know why, but after a while, things stop working. (or at least they did in mine).

either way, also make sure that your system is up to date as well.
