Adobe Photoshop/Photoshop, need access privileges

Question
(PhotoShop CS2)

Hi,
HELP! I just got back into design with a Mac after having two children (it's been six years!) I was given some photos by my boss. When I place them in Quark they are way too big and Quark will only let me resize them so much (it's not enough). I opened the photo in PhotoShop, resized it for my Quark document, went to save it and I got the message "Could not "save as" because you do not have the necessary access privileges." I have a deadline of today for this Quark project... it's done except for these dang photos. I would appreciate any help that you might give. : )

Answer
Hi Tara,

I'll try and offer up what I can, but like you, I'm on a very pressing deadline and will shortly be removing  myself from the list of "experts" for a while. Too busy!

Anyway, are you on a local network, or is your machine independent? If you're on a network, you should talk to your administrator about this, as he/she can reconfigure your privileges. And I'm assuming you're using OS X here.

I'm using 10.3.9, and I'm not on a network. I've also never had this happen, so it's hard for me to advise you as to what you should do.

-- First I would suggest using Disk Utility to repair your privileges. I'd also reboot your machine. Disk Utility is located in the Utilities folder, in your Applications folder on your hard drive.

-- Also, go to where you have the photo saved, and with the photo file closed, select it (without opening it), do Get Info (Command + I). You should see something like this:

Make sure you have Read and Write selected, near the bottom of the box.

-- Try saving to another folder or partition.

-- And take a look at this link and see if you can find anything there that would apply to your situation.

-- Here's another link that explains in detail the situation of Unix privileges and OS X:

-- That said, you may have to log off and log back on as Root. I hesitate to bring that up right now, as I don't want to confuse you since you're just getting back into the Mac world. So try the other things, read the info I've provided links for, and then get back to me if you're still having trouble.

I really need to get to work, and I won't be answering questions on this board any more today. But if you can't solve this, please feel free to email me at lizal@little-works.com. Please put something about All Experts in the subject line.

Thanks,

Lisa

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.

Awards and Honors
PICA award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award for the design of a media kit that accompanied a magazine I was art directing at the time)
