Adobe Photoshop/Resolution

Question
I recently recieved some graphics that were built in 72 dpi.  My photoshop templates are set up for 300 dpi to match my printer. Of course when i drag the image onto the template it's not big enough so I have to resize it or change the resolution.

The lady who designed these graphics said I could tell photoshop to open the file in the correct resolution Instead of having to change it after the file is open. I have tried to figure this out but can't find a way.

Is it possible for me to do this or would she need to change the original file size?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide me.

Answer
Hi Paul,

You're right. As far as I know, you can't change an image's resolution until you open it. There's just no way for a software program to be able to discern information like that until, and unless, it actually reads the document.

What she might have been thinking is that you can change an image's color profile when you open it, so the color profile will match your working environment in Photoshop. And of course you can create a new Photoshop document to have a certain resolution.

But she needs to change the original file size in order for it to match your template.

Hope this helps!

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.
