Adobe Photoshop/Saving Duotone Images

Question
I have PS 7.0 and I have genrally been able to save my PS alterations in JPEG to be better able to e-mail or upload to sites. I recently tried to do a Sepia Tone and setn to the Duotone screen, made my adjustments and liked the results. I find that I am not allowed to save this in JPEG so unlikely to be able to share on line   Any ideas?  Thanks

Answer
Hi Bud,

That's kind of odd -- I tested out your problem on my machine, and was able to create a duotone, then save it as a JPEG. I was also able to use the Photo Filter feature (under the Image pulldown menu, then Adjustments submenu) and add a sepia tone to a photo, then save it as a JPEG. In both cases I just used Save As.

But that said, and keeping in mind your situation -- If you're saving images to use online, you should use the Save for Web feature in Photoshop, rather than using Save As. Save for Web adds the compression needed for the Web, and in doing so, naturally pares down the file size, while maintaining quality.

Try these steps next time:

1. Create a duotone by selecting the Mode pulldown menu, and then Grayscale. Say Yes to discarding color information.

2. Choose your colors for the duotone (or tritone, or quadtone -- whatever you're creating).

3. At this point, if you're going to use the image on the Web, I'd use Save for Web: File pulldown menu > Save for Web > and select JPEG in the right side of the dialog box.

Hope this helps! And please post back if it doesn't, or you have any more questions.

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.
