this may sound completely silly, but how do i put a border on an image? i know how to do it when printing, but not on the actual image..

What you need to do is press the square path tool (looks like a square on the tool bar ;) )  and make a sqaure around what you want.  Click the brush tool and make the brush the size you want your square. Click the swatch you want. Then go to your paths tool bar and click the triangle thats on the right side.  select stroke path.  click the brush tool. Done :)
