I'm told I need to obtain photoshop for my 11-year olds science project.  I need
to take a photo & alter the compression/bits(??) in order to determine how many
bits are required to generate a quality photograph.  Do I need photoshop, or is
there a cheaper alternative. If I need it, is it difficult to do.

I'm a little confused on what your asking...but if you just looking to change the size ratio, you will need photoshop. Most schools SHOULD have this program, and its ridiculous that your son is required to get a 500 dollar program.
