Adobe Photoshop/.gif problems in Photoshop

Question
I have this bizarre problem with Illustrator and Photoshop.  First of all, I am
on a MacBook Pro running OS X v10.4, and I am using CS2.

I have this image that I drew in Illustrator.  I save it as a .ai file, then open it in
Photoshop.  Once in Photoshop, I put a background behind it, a little bit of
text, and adjust the dimensions of it.  I want to be able to save it for the web,
but for some reason I cannot, because that option is greyed out, but I really
need that option.  I have tried to save it as a .jpeg and then use another
program to convert it to .gif, but the colors become all distorted and grainy.

What am I doing wrong here?  I keep trying to analyze the steps I've taken but
I am no closer to discovering whether it is a problem with Illustrator,
Photoshop, or going between the two.

Thanks.

Answer
I'm not sure...

I did what you did for one of my pieces and I got the save for web option.

try a few things
1. check your color mode. if you're in lab for some reason it wont' do it
2. save as a jpeg, close then open the jpeg in photoshop. (you probably should do this anyway so you won't damage the original)
3. make sure you're in 8-bit
4. can you save as a .gif at all? Can you go to save a copy and save as a .gif there?

as always
update photoshop and quicktime.
