Adobe Photoshop/line spacing and text

Question
For some reason when I type my text lines are spaced WAY to far apart.  For instance right now I'm typing at a 12pt Arial.  When I go to the text pallete (however you spell that damn word) it claims the spacing is 9.67 but it ain't.  Help.

Answer
Hi Andrew,

The line spacing (or "leading") in any given Photoshop file is going to reflect the settings from your last saved document.

You say it doesn't look like the spacing is 9.67 -- to be sure, select your text tool from your tool palette, then select the text. When it's all highlighted, check the line spacing area of your character palette. If it doesn't say 9.67, and 9.67 is what you need, then just type in the value 9.67.

If it still doesn't look like what you were expecting, make sure that the lines of text you're working with don't have returns in them. In other words, if there's a hard return after the end of each line, the computer won't see the lines as a paragraph, and thus, won't apply a line spacing value to them.

Check these things and if it still doesn't work, post back. If you really feel like you've done all this and things right, send me your file: lizal@little-works.com.

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.
