Question

Which sort of software would you recommend for enhancment of scanned  35mm photos for windows xp?

I already have Jasc Paint Shop installed.

Answer
Hi Thomas,

What kind of enhancement do you want to do? Your answer to that question will help me answer your question, LOL!

1. There are soooo many programs out there! For basic image enhancement such as altering and correcting the tonality of photos, and brightening/sharpening photos, Paint Shop Pro is fine. You don't say which version you have, but version 9, the latest, does a LOT of image enhancement and clean up. You can check out the features here:

2.Since I've been using it for nearly 14 years, I could never argue with Photoshop :-)

3. But if you don't want to invest that kind of money, or you'd like to use something simpler, you could try Photoshop Elements:

This is a great program, too -- a scaled-down version of "big" Photoshop.

There are also many, many shareware programs out there from which to choose, so if you like, please post back with some specifics as to what you want to do, and maybe I can help you narrow it down!

But I think I've already mentioned "The Big Three," PaintShop Pro, Photoshop CS, and Photoshop Elements. Those would be my first choices, although personally, I've always been a Photoshop user. I've had students, though, who swear by PaintShop Pro.

So check them out and please post back with a little added info on what you're doing if you need any help choosing.

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.

Awards and Honors
PICA award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award for the design of a media kit that accompanied a magazine I was art directing at the time)
