Adobe Photoshop/photoshop contrast

Question
I am working on an image right now (rgb, 300 dpi, 18.5" x 23") and I am trying to increase the contrast on a particular part of the image almost to the point of blown out whites and solid blacks, but some detail preserved. However, each time I attempt to increase the contrast through the brightness/contrast feature or even the curves or levels features, the preview looks perfect, but when the effect is applied the image looks unchanged. How can I fix this?

Answer
The problem can be in your file MODE, or this could be if you are using a selection outside your working area area of levels.

Press the command Ctrl+D to deselect the area on canvas, and check teh file mode too. try with different modes to check the result.

Hope this will help, feel free to ask anything further
