Adobe Photoshop/rectangular image into trapezoidal image?

Question
I want to convert a rectangular image of a rug (tif, gif, or jpg) into a trapezoidal
image, so that I can insert it into a photo of a room and have it fit the
perspective of the room and show how the rug will look with the furniture.  I
have been unable to find a way to do this in either Photoshop or Illustrator.  Can
you help?

Answer
Hi Kathy - Depending on your version of Photoshop, you can use the Transform or Perspective tools. You will find these options under Edit > Transform > Perspective. In older versions than CS, I believe you had a checkbox available in the toolbar when you selected Edit > Transform, or you can grab a corner and hold down Ctrl/Cmd + Alt/Apple + Shift while dragging (leave off Shift to manipulate a corner without perspective).

In CS2/3, you can also use the Warp tool to have a more fluid control, but it can be difficult to get right.

Be sure your rug image is on a layer by itself, and always work on a copy or duplicate layer so you don't lose your original image.

If you have further questions, please feel free to ask!
