Question
Hi,
I have recreated a web page and saved it as a psd that was originally saved as a jpeg.  I've added a new graphic to this page but I need to replace the old text with new text. How can I do this and keep the background in tact?  Please advise.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Carolyn,

If I understand you correctly, you've copied a Web page. And are you asking how to add text to it, using Photoshop?

Working under that assumption, in effect, you have two options.

1. Erase the old text from the background, using the eraser tool or the magic wand, or whatever "removal" tool you're most comfortable with. Create a new layer by choosing the Text tool and typing your new text.

Of course, that could potentially leave your background damaged -- so you'll need to use the Clone Stamp tool, or the Patch tool, or any tool that you're comfortable using that will allow you to recreate that damaged part of the background.

2. Copy part of the background the old text appears behind, and make a new layer. Paste this piece of the background, and essentially, do just the opposite of number 1: Create the background piece, clone that area until it's large enough to accommodate the text, add the text to a layer above this new layer, and keep both layers above the background.

No matter how you do it, somehow you'll either have to destroy or cover up the old text. And this will probably involve having to recreate that part of the background.

I'm at a disadvantage here, though, because  a) I have no idea of your skill level with Photoshop,  and  b) I can't see the picture.

But without knowing these variables, this is what I'd suggest.

Also, a tip -- in case you don't already, always work in layers, and always save a copy of that layered file in case you have to go back and edit. You might already do this -- it's the best insurance I know when it comes to changes!

Anyway, if what I've said doesn't make sense or I'm off the mark, please post back and give me all the details you can. It's really hard for me to tell you the exact steps to take without having more information.

Also post the picture online if you're able and send me the link so I can look at it myself and be able to advise you more efficiently.

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.

PICA award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award for the design of a media kit that accompanied a magazine I was art directing at the time)
