Adobe Photoshop/How to reset print default margins

Question
I am revising an 8.5" X 11.0" 2-fold (3 panel) brocheure in landscape orientation, and want to print it with a 5/16" right margin.  Although the layout is correct according to the screen rulers (which show a full 8.5" X 11."), when I try printing potoshop defaults to a 0.5 inch right margin, cutting out sone of the desired graphic.  How can I change the default margin, or oherwise adjust something to get a printed sheet with a 5/16" right margin?

Answer
Hi Carroll,

This is most likely not a Photoshop problem -- it's probably your printer drivers that are cutting off your page. Unless you have a printer that's designed to print borderless pages, you'll have this problem no matter what kind of document you're trying to print, and no matter what application you're using.

Two options:

1. Go to the Web site for the company that makes your printer and see if there are any drivers that allow for printing past the default. Sometimes also people create hacks that let you do this, too, so you might check one of the software update sites that applies to your computer (i.e. ZDNet, Download Dispatch, VersionTracker).

2. In your print dialog box (which is not a Photoshop function but a function of your printer's software), see if there's an option for scaling the layout to the page. If you have a Preview option, click on it and see if the scaling function is there. You might have to experiment to see where the scaling option is; it can be different with different printers.

Hope this helps --

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.

PICA award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award for the design of a media kit that accompanied a magazine I was art directing at the time)
