Adobe Photoshop/resolution, megapixel question

Question
Hello Kamal,

I have a 7 megapixel camera.
After taking pictures and opened it in Photoshop, the pictures are in 72 dpi thus image size is BIG - 42x32 inch!
Is this considered as low-res picture?

I need to submit some of these photos for work and they required min. 300 dpi.
Can I just change the resolution in Photoshop>Image>ImageSize?
I am thinking to uncheck “Resample Image” and change the resolution to 300.

Is this the right way to do?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Jodi,
though its 72dpi, since the image size is BIG, there shouldn't be any problems in printing.
Instead of changing it to 300 do this.

Assume you want to print it in a4 page. Create a new document in adobe photoshop, with a4 size and 300 dpi resolution.

Now open your 72dpi picture and drag it onto the new empty document.

Use the free transform tool (ctrl+t) and resize it to the a4 size. Since its a BIG image, it should not loose quality.

This way you have high quality picture in 300 dpi.
