Hi. Academically i come from computing background but a very keen learner of graphics in hope of becoming an artist some day :) My Q is that i make a design in psd cmyk colors, but when it goes to the press, the result is not even closer to the photoshop colors visible to me on my monitor. pls give some tips from 4 color printing point of view. thanks!

Answer
always follow these rule of a thumb for a print related job.

1. the file mode: CMYK
2. File format: TIFF, if not possible, use EPS
3. Resolution: (check image size) atleast; 180DPI max can be upto 300DPI
4. check Gamma Correction before sending
