Answer
Hi Suzie,

I hope I can help! I have a couple of questions for you, though. First, what kind of substrate are you using for printing? That is, are you printing on paper, or printing to something like a T-shirt or a coffee mug? That might help us figure out how best to make your black stay black, and adhere properly. This will also tell me what color space you're working in.

Secondly, if you're printing this yourself, what kind of dye sublimation printer do you have, or are you using?

One of the most popular formulas for rich black when using Photshop is 63C, 52M, 51Y, and 100K. I've also seen it as 40C and 100K.

That said, if you're farming this out to a printer, or having ad specialties made (like coffee mugs), the rich black question is easy, because you should contact them and ask them what guidelines you should follow.

But if you're doing this yourself, let me know so we can determine which formula would be best. A lot has to do with your substrate.

Hope this helps for now --

Lisa

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.

Awards and Honors
PICA award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award for the design of a media kit that accompanied a magazine I was art directing at the time)
