Adobe Photoshop/saving jpeg files

Question
I am saving images in multiples of 2048X3072.  That is, I have images which are 2048X3072  pixels
                           4096X6144  pixels
                           6144X9216  pixels
               and         8192X12288 pixels

Using maximum quality, indicated as "10" on the save menu, I seem to be able to save all images up to 3x, but get a program error on some images at 4x.  I suspect that images with a lot of fine detail are the ones which give me problems.

My questions:

Are there limits as to the final file size which the jpeg save algorithm can generate?

If I upgrade from Photoshop Elements 2.0, will I get an improved save capability?

Answer
Although I couldn't find any hard and fast material to support my ideas, it's my feeling that you're being limited by your computer, rather than your software.

As far as I know, there are no limits to the JPEG saving algorithm -- but not being an expert in JPEG, I'll refer you to that entry in Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jpeg

I'm also not sure that upgrading your software would be of any benefit here. As I mentioned, I think the issue might lie more with your processor. I tried to replicate saving a file with your largest specs, and although I'm using Photoshop CS, it worked -- albeit slowly -- and I have a dual processor 2GHz G5.

So to answer your questions: As far as I know -- no, and no.

Hope this helps!

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.

Awards and Honors
PICA award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award for the design of a media kit that accompanied a magazine I was art directing at the time)
