Question
I am working on a picture with a few layers..one layer I used the bevel/emboss effect. When i go to save my project to jpeg, my effects i had disapear. Also when i try to merge layers..the effects disapear also, not sure what i'm doing wrong. I want to be able to save the image to a jpeg without losing the effects i've made to it.
using Photoshop 7.0

Answer
Is there any way you can send me this picture? I'd like to try this for myself, as otherwise, it's hard for me to figure out what's going on. I've never heard of this happening, and can't find any related info online as to this problem, either.

A few questions:

-- Are you doing just a straight Save As to JPEG, or are you using Save for Web?

-- Have you tried any of the other layer-merging commands such as Flatten Image or Merge Visible? If so, do you get the same results?

-- Has this just started happening, or have things always been like this? If it's a new problem, have you installed any other software recently?

-- Have you tried any other layer effects, and if so, do they remain or disappear when you save as JPEG?

-- Is it only the JPEG format where you notice things disappearing after the save?

It's very possible it's your installation of Photoshop isn't correct, and you might need to reinstall. My guess is that somehow the compression routine for JPEG is messing up your effects.

But if it's at all possible, please email a small version of the photo to lizal@little-works.com and I'll take a look at it.

Thanks,

Lisa

Expertise

I've used Photoshop since the release of version 2. I taught college commercial art and graphic design for 10 years, and within that realm, taught Photoshop at every level, and with each successive product upgrade. My experience with Photoshop is thus extensive and well-rounded, from photo retouching to color adjustment to incorporating Photoshop and ImageReady into Web design. I am primarily a Mac user (since 1985), but am also PC-savvy.

Experience

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years, was a national magazine art director, a designer for the Department of Defense, a college art instructor, and have my own freelance Web and graphic design business, LittleWorks (www.little-works.com). I've also worked for several printing companies, in both prepress and art.

PICA award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award for the design of a media kit that accompanied a magazine I was art directing at the time)
