Subject: 12 year old daughter

Question
My 12 year old daughter has been having headaches, bodyaches, high fever(101-104) and severe leg cramps for months now. She missed 55 days of school this past year and now she is having a rotten summer. She has had test after test and blood work to no avail. can you please help me here?

Answer
This could obviously a complicated medical situation.  If the fever, aches and headaches are truly persistent and contiguous over the past months, then it does certainly sound like something is going on.  There are many, many things that this could be.  I would make sure that some of the following things had been considered:
1. Infections such as chronic sinusitis, tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, kidney infections
2. Infections such as Lymes disease or other Rickettsial illnesses
3. Autoimmune disorders such as lupus (among others)
4. Malignancies such as lymphomas or leukemia's

If she has not already seen a specialist, and some of the infections have been looked at and ruled out, then a rheumatologist might be a good next step.
