Subject: Can my boyfriend adopt my child?

Question
we're from Florida. my child is 9 yrs old, the biological father is not in the birth certificate, in fact he sent me a notarized letter from NY giving up his parental rights when my daughter was 4. My boyfriend and I live together and have been for 7 yrs. bottom line he is the father and he wants to make it official.

Answer
Dear Sylvia-
In order to get an accurate answer to your question, you would need to contact a local lawyer who does adoptions or the local court that does them.  The answer to your question will probably differ depending on where you live.  Adoption laws vary from statew to state and some judges are more flexible than others in interpreting the law.  Based on my experience, I think that it is unlikely that most courts would entertain an adoption petition from an unmarried partner.
