Subject: Adopting my nephew

Question
I am 24 years old married with two sons ages 4 and 6. My wife is Active Duty Coast Guard. My sister is 17 years and just gave birth last month to a baby boy. My wife and I would like to adopt him. He has been living with us since birth. She is still in high school and the father is 23 years old who currently isn't working. The father is listed on the birth certificate but has not helped at all financially with my nephew. Where do I start? How long does the process usually take? My sister is willing to let my wife and I adopt him.

Answer
You need to talk to a lawyer and since your wife is in the military they may be able to help with that problem. Family adoptions can differ alot from those done by strangers. I would contact a lawyer and get the ball rolling it can take a while if you need a homestudy those can get costly. In some family placements those are not always needed depends on where your located. Best wishes and congratulations.
