About Roberta Rosenberg
Expertise
International Adoption - I am an active member of the adoption community. I have 3 children, 2 adopted from Korea. I can answer all questions about Korean adoption, most questions on international. What I do not know I can easily find out. (PLEASE NOTE: I cannot answer any questions involving immigration/family adoption legal issues. These matters of local/state/federal law should be discussed with a qualified attorney.)

Experience
Beyond my own personal experience as an adoptive parent, I'm also the developer of several websites related to adoption. Adopting from Korea (www.adoptkorea.com) and AdoptShoppe (www.adoptshoppe.com) are just two of my current sites.

Subject: Adopting Brazilian niece

Question
I am American and my wife is Brazilian. She has a niece that is 15 and lives in poverty. Her father is not present in her life and her mother barely gets by. We have her permission to adopt her and bring her to USA, but are unsure of the process or if it is even possible.

Thanks

Answer
Hi, thanks for writing. You'll need an immigration attorney to review what's possible between Brazilian and US immigration law. Offhand, this should be doable since we're looking at a family-based adoption, or in the very least permanent guardianship.

You can find an attorney at the American Bar Assn website. Look for immigration specialists licensed to work with your state.

Good luck.
