Question I am American and my wife is Brazilian. She has a niece that is 15 and lives in poverty. Her father is not present in her life and her mother barely gets by. We have her permission to adopt her and bring her to USA, but are unsure of the process or if it is even possible.
Thanks
Answer Hi, thanks for writing. You'll need an immigration attorney to review what's possible between Brazilian and US immigration law. Offhand, this should be doable since we're looking at a family-based adoption, or in the very least permanent guardianship.
You can find an attorney at the American Bar Assn website. Look for immigration specialists licensed to work with your state.
