Adoption Issues/Niece

QuestionMy niece was adopted about two to three years ago and wanted to know if there was a way I can get in contact with her. She has moved out of Texas to another state. Would I have to go through the home study program to spend time with her if I am allowed to see or visit with her.
AnswerHi Karen-
Since your niece is adopted, her adoptive parents are the only ones who can say whether or not to allow you to visit with your niece. You do not need to take any courses or go through a home study program before you visit your niece.
If you know your niece's current whereabouts, I would suggest that you ask her to initially request permission from her adoptive parents to be in contact with you. If you don't know her current whereabouts, that may pose a problem because the agency that handled the adoption will probably refuse to give you that information, citing confidentiality.
In the event that you do meet with your niece, I would urge you to keep in mind that her adoptive parents are now her parents and they should always be consulted about contact with other members of the family, etc. In addition, if your niece complains about how she is treated in her adoptive home, you should encourage her to work it out with her new parents. Of course if she reports abuse or neglect by her adoptive parents then you should report it to the authorities in the state where she currently resides.
I hope that covers what you wanted to know. If not, feel free to ask a follow-up question.
