Question
dear julie,
i found out that my cousin isn't my real cousin.  she was adopted 15 years ago.  i always felt she wasn't part of our family, we all have ginger hair while she has blonde.  she also albeno, what should i do? accept her back or help her find her real parents.  please reply, many thanks eberto..

Answer
Hi Eberto,

I would accept her as your cousin.  If she wants to find her biological family, I know she would probably love your help in her search but I would not push her.  It is a decision she would need to make on her own.

She is your cousin whether she is related to you by blood or not.  My cousin is also adopted and I love her just as much as I love any of my biological relatives.

Please let me know if I can help you any further.  I wish you all the best and please remember that love knows no color...

Kindest Regards,
Julie

Expertise

I am a mom to four children, two of whom came home through adoption. I can answer questions regarding attachment issues, adoption disruption, and older child adoption. We have been through a great deal of counseling and I have read many books on attachment plus attended attachment seminars. We are also (as of 2012) a foster/adopt family so I will be able to help with questions pertaining to foster care, too.

Experience

Personal experience with attachment disorders such as RAD and ODD, also experience with issues such as autism, undisclosed special needs, adoption disruption and dissolution. We also have adopted both domestically and internationally and plan on adopting one more time.
