Question Hi Peter,
I am writing in response to Melanie's question to you as i am in the same situation. How much and how long does these procedures take, i know that it would only be a very rough estimate. How's the best way to find a good lawyer in my area to deal with these matters.
Hope you can help
Regards Emma
Answer First of all, adoption law varies from state to state. Generally speaking, the following procdures must be followed. There has to be evidence that the child is free for adoption and an adoption home study must be done on the adoptive parent(s). It is a good idea to find a lawyer who has done many adoptions in the past. A good source of names is either the clerk of the court where you will adopt or your county Bar Association. Don't hestitate to discuss fees upfront. Costs and length of time will vary.
Your total costs will probably be at least $1,000 and it can run to several thousand especially if the "freeing process" is complicated.
Good luck.
