About Peter C. Winkler, CSW
Expertise
I have experience with adoption subsidy, the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children and variety of other adoption related matters. I hope that I can be helpful to those who are considering adoption or would like to adopt a child.

Experience
I am a social worker with an MSW and I have over thirty years of experience in family and children's services. I have worked as Director of adoption services and of the Interstate Compact in a large state agency. I have also provided direct services to children and families in a preventive services program. I currently prepare adoption studies for those who are adopting domestically or internationally.

Question
Hi Peter,
I am writing in response to Melanie's question to you as i am in the same situation. How much  and how long does these procedures take, i know that it would only be a very rough estimate.  How's the best way to find a good lawyer in my area to deal with these matters.
Hope you can help
Regards Emma

Answer
First of all, adoption law varies from state to state.  Generally speaking, the following procdures must be followed.  There has to be evidence that the child is free for adoption and an adoption home study must be done on the adoptive parent(s).  It is a good idea to find a lawyer who has done many adoptions in the past.  A good source of names is either the clerk of the court where you will adopt or your county Bar Association.  Don't hestitate to discuss fees upfront.  Costs and length of time will vary.
Your total costs will probably be at least $1,000 and it can run to several thousand especially if the "freeing process" is complicated.
Good luck.
