About Peter C. Winkler, CSW
Expertise
I have experience with adoption subsidy, the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children and variety of other adoption related matters. I hope that I can be helpful to those who are considering adoption or would like to adopt a child.

Experience
I am a social worker with an MSW and I have over thirty years of experience in family and children's services. I have worked as Director of adoption services and of the Interstate Compact in a large state agency. I have also provided direct services to children and families in a preventive services program. I currently prepare adoption studies for those who are adopting domestically or internationally.

Adoption Issues - international adoption

Expert: Peter C. Winkler, CSW - 6/24/2007

Question
My husband and I are both 28 years old. We have been trying to conceive with no luck so far. We are now considering international adoption. In what country would we have the best luck in bringing home an infant? Also, if we are in the middle of the adoption process and I happen to get pregnant would that interfear with our eligability to move on with the adoption? Thanks you for any help you can offer.

Answer
Janel-My first recommendation would be China, but you and your husband must be at least 30 years old to begin the adoption process for that country.  South Korea, Russia and Guatemala are other options, because these countries have generated the most adoptive placements to the US in recent years.  There are many good adoption agencies throughout the US, but I would recommend that you contact and work with an agency in your state (or nearby) that has an established track record of successful placements from the country that you are considering.  It is always a good idea to speak with families who have already adopted through the agency to get their feedback.
I have not found that the adoptive mother becoming pregnant during the process to be a deal-breaker.  However, there is nothing wrong with bringing the matter up with the agency that you decide to work with.
Good luck!
