Expert: Peter C. Winkler, CSW Date: 4/25/2004 Subject: i need to change my name back
Question when i was almost 3 my birth father was killed in a car accident. My mother remarried another man and he adopted us and in turn myt last name changed to hisd last name. Well i am 25 years old now and my step father and mother have been divorced for quite some time now, and i would like to change my name back to my birth father last name becuase that is the name that everyone knows me by. The reason why i am asking is this. I used a copy of my original birth cert. to get a drivers liscence, and such. (I moved to another state when my mom and step dad spilt, and registered in school with my original fathers last name.) Well i have lost the original (copy) of my birth fathers last name birth cert., and my liscence, and have only my social security card stating original last name. So therefore i cant get another liscence without it nor can i prove to anyone that i am the person i say i am (out with friends at clubs- purchasing things with checks and so forth).how do i go about unsealing the original or whatever i need to do- if you have any questions or advice please help thank you --- mike
Answer This is a question that I've never run into and so I can't really give an adequate answer. You might have to go to court to have your name legaaly changed to the one you've been using. I'd pose the question to people ar your state motor vehicle office, SSA and/or the place that issues birth certificates in your state, and then go from there. You may have broken the law, but there doesn't seem to be any harm done to anyone but yourself.
