AboutRachel Expertise I can answer questions about fostering - What's it like to be a foster carer? Who to go to for help? Experiences with troubled children. Attachment problems. Leaving care. Long term fostering. Dealing with birth families. Working with schools, statements, EBD schools.
Experience My husband and I have been foster carers for over five years and we are currently long term carers for two boys. We have had one boy from the age of 9 to 14 years who is with us long term. We have done short term respite care, one year seeing a sixteen year old girl through to leaving care and long term care of another boy from age 10-11

Question My sister has two kids in Florida and she is not caring for her kids the way a mom is supposed to. She is very neglectful and seems very uncaring. My mother (Aslo in Florida) has called Children and Families because she is worried about them. My sister has already been in trouble with them before and was told to straighten up. I am sure this time they will be taken. My question is if they do get taken, can I get custody of them even though I live in Michigan? There is no other family that is capable of caring for them and I don't want them to end up with strangers.

Unfortunately as I live in the UK and am unfamiliar with the state laws in the US, I am unable to give a definite answer to this question.
However I would have expected that a family member who cares about the children and is capable of looking after them would be given preference over strangers - but as I say, I am not familiar with US legislation and policy.
