AboutColleen Expertise I can answer questions about the adoption process. I don't handle questions about searches for adoptive parents.
Experience I have three adopted children. The two youngest were adopted as infants. In both cases, we dealt with the birthmother during her pregnancy and a bit afterwards. Our children are now old enough to begin asking questions and we are dealing with those issues.

Question Do you Have to be married to adopt a child?
Answer Hi Leah: It really depends on how you plan to adopt. If you have someone you know who is pregnant and wants to give up the child to you, the court doesn't have any position one way or the other about the adoptive parent being single or married. You would have to have a home study done in any event, and they would be the ones to approve or disapprove you, and most times it doesn't matter if you're single. However, if you plan to apply to an agency for adoption you may find it harder because there are not a lot of healthy infants so most agencies try to cut down on the waiting list by taking only married applicants. Even some of the out of country adoptions no longer allow single people. You might try doing a goggle search on the internet using "adoption - single" and see if you can get more information that way about what countries/agencies are accepting applications from single people. Good luck!
