Adult Film/question about the industry
Expert: Jim Boyd - 9/18/2007
QuestionHey whats up Jim. I need your opinion, I am thinking about going into the adult industry (production, filmmaking and post), I went to school for post production, and other audio stuff, I am now attending a filmmaking school in nyc called new york film academy, it is known world wide. I have a few questions for you. Knowing cali is known for porn, is it worth moving out that way knowing that almost everything is digital and that there isnt really no need for a distribution company due to the fact that all you really need is a site and money to promote it? The other question is; It seems like companies in the industry is now arriving from miami, fl. What would you say is the best move between L.A. and Miami and why?
AnswerHey Chris,
While it’s true that there is a lot of porn coming out of the Miami area, please keep in mind that technically California is in fact the only place in the country where adult film production is legal.
Now is it necessary to live in California to produce adult films? Well, no. The simple fact is that porn is being produced in several states besides California, Florida being one of them. There are also several adult production companies along the east coast including New York. My own company is located in central Kentucky of all places, but we shoot in North/South Carolina, Illinois, Florida, California and other states quite often.
Saying that “everything is digital and that there isn’t really no need for a distribution company due to the fact that all you really need is a site and money to promote it” is a fair statement, but only to a point. Yes you may very well sell a lot of your films but you will be missing out on the largest part of the market. The renal market is much larger than the sales market when it comes to adult films. Statistically, the average adult is three times more likely to rent porn from the local video store than they are too purchase it outright...even an online purchase. So In my opinion some affiliation with a distribution company is mandatory.
What’s best Miami or California? Your odds of success are about the same in either location assuming you are willing to put it the required effort. It’s just really a question of where you want to live and do business.
Also please keep in mind that there are a world of legal issues involved in running a business of this type. Besides the thing with California you also have the Title 18 Section 2257 and CFR Title 28 Part 75 laws that are a “must read” for anyone even thinking about becoming a part of this business. The slightest failure to understand and comply with these laws can earn you some hefty fines and long prison stays.
Hope this helps,
Jim
