Question
What exactly is swinging, and how does one get in to it?

Answer
The term swinging has been used in a lot of ways, but the most commonly accepted meaning refers to committed couples who have sex with other people by mutual agreement and usually in a social setting with other swingers.

Technically, by this definition, a single person is not a swinger, since it is accepted that single people are free to explore their sexuality with a variety of partners. Traditionally, though, such explorations must come to an end once one is married or in a committed relationship. Swingers do not accept that, and continue to explore their sexuality with a variety of partners.

Swinging is not the same as adultery or cheating, since it is done by mutual agreement of both partners.

Swingers express their sexual explorations in a variety of ways. Some simply watch other couples make love and are in turn watched, others have certain limits on what can and can not be done with other people, and others have very open relationships with very few rules and restrictions. It is up to each couple to determine what works best for them.

There are only a few rules in swinging. The most important one and one that is considered inviolable is that "no means no". In any swinging event, a predatory participant who can't take a simple "no thank you" for an answer will find themselves out the door. One of the things that makes swinging unique is that it creates an environment where women can feel supported and more free to be sexually expressive.

Swingers meet other people at couples dances, through ads on the Internet and in magazines and newspapers, and at private and commercial swing parties. Typically, there is a lot of social interaction. Swinging, then, is primarily a social activity for couples that offers the added advantage of sexual stimulation and opportunities for sexual exploration.
