Hi, Robert,

1. What percentage of 70 is 5?

Something times 70 = 5.
This is a division:

5 divided by 70 = .071428571428571428571428571428571, which you can round off to
.07, and change to a percentage by multiplying by 100:  100 * .07 = 7 %

2. What number is 20% of 500?
Please explain.

Something = 20% times 500
20% is 0.2

Something = 0.2 times 500 = 100

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
