Hi, Sharyn,

If A = 45, then  s^2 = 45 and  s = sqrt(45).  Use your calculator:

Click View/Standard.
Enter 45
Click sqrt
Get 6.7082039324993690892275210061938, which rounds to
6.708

Click MC, then MS. (saves it.)

Enter 53
Click sqrt.
Get 7.280109889280518271097302491527
Click - (minus)
Click MR
Click =
Get 0.5719059567811491818697814853332 which rounds to 0.572 feet.

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
