Question:  find the range of f(x)-5/(1-x)

YOu mean:  f(x) EQUALS 5/(1-x), don't you?
...............................
Hi, Molly,
The range of f(x) is the domain of its inverse.  Write:
      5
y =  ------
    1 - x
Now switch the variables x,y:

      5
x =  ------
    1 - y

Solve for y:

x - xy = 5
x - 5 = xy
   x - 5
y = ------
     x

The domain of THIS is  x /= 0, so that is the range of your original f(x).

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
