Question
why in some problems involving the area of a triangle do mathematicians us the symbol "k" for area instead of "A"

Answer
info found at http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/67316.html

but my guess is because the letter K when written a certain way forms 3 angles, and 3 angles is what a triangle is made of.

by that i mean

|``/
|`/
|/
|\
|`\
|``\

it looks like a K and Forms 3 angles, top, middle and bottom. And if you turn it so that the vertical line becomes horizontal, it looks like 3 angles which add up to be 180, which is what the angles within a triangle add up to be.

In short, no one really knows why K is used for area.
