Question
Ten apples cost a penny, and 25 pears cost two pennies.  Suppose I buy 100 apples and pears for 9.5 pennies.  How many of each shall I have?

I'm having a problem with getting the three equations set up.  I can solve by substitution or elimination once I have the equations.

Answer
(1/10)a + (2/25)p = 9.5
a + p = 100

a = -p + 100

((-p + 100)/10) + (2/25)p = 9.5
(-1/10)p + 10 + (2/25)p = 9.5
(-1/50)p = -.5
p = 25

a = -25 + 100 = 75

so you bought 75 apples and 25 pears

and as you can see there are only 2 variables and 2 equations, and not 3.
